Saving The Suburb Of Eaton

The sad thing is this Christmas there are hundred of homeless people and the government have 150 perfectly good empty houses they just don’t care.

‘Save Eaton’ is a campaign designed to save the 395 RAAF Base Houses from removal and

child care center to be bulldozed

child care center to be bulldozed

destruction by Defence. The Campaign is a community based effort involving Local Business, Housing Industry Groups, Local school councils and concerned citizens.

There are many reasons to save the suburb from destruction, not the least being the absolute need of people for affordable housing but also the desire to save a unique piece of history as well. At present there are some 700 blocks on the drawing board for development in Muirhead and they will not see housing until late 2011 at the earliest, currently there are at least 125 houses currently vacant and that will increase drastically in the next 2 months with a complete withdrawal within 2 years, and the houses being removed by 2014/15.

Different Ways Save Eaton Campaign Is Looking At Promoting Our Cause

State Of Play

Currently defense has accelerated the removal of people from these houses and are emptying this suburb very quickly before we can get the people behind us. We are trying as best we can to organize ourselves.

xxxxxxxx,
What would make the government do something so stupid?

Rebecca Harris,

Dr Charles Eaton,
one of these houses was MY HOME!!

xxxxxxxx,
I would like to see Defence keep the RAAF Base Houses - renovate them not demolish them. I do not support housing homelesses people in these houses or anyone else from the general public. These houses are for use by Defence and their families and should be kept that way. Come on Defence wake up and do something.

John Lyne,

xxxxxxxx,

Diana Rickard,
I spent Christmas Eve 1974 in a house on the RAAF base - enjoying a pre-Christmas drink and fish and chips with a friend there. We finished up at the Base Hospital during Tracy's eye and looked out at an eerie, silent world of no trees or birds in the morning. that house and most of the others were rebuilt and cherished by most living in them afterwards. This is Darwin's heritage. It's unique and we shouldn't lose it.

xxxxxxxx,

Greg Chapman,
I went through cyclone Tracy in one of those houses that is not there now[not that one any how]It's the only peace of old Darwin left and it all should be on the National Heritage list.Don't forget all the birds and animals that LIVE there AS WELL also.
Greg

Mandy and Ian Carmichael,
The more I hear the more unbelievable. What is wrong with these people, this is such a dreadful waste!

Currently there is a massive shortage of both short-term and long-term accommodation in the NT and here we are with all these houses that are
already in place going to be destroyed with no plan for the future for the area.

We hope people will support our campaign to save these houses and the suburb of Eaton, a Public meeting will be held at Ludmilla School to rally
support to save the houses, PLEASE show your support and register TODAY on the Email Form Today! We can as a community can change what is happening here!

a ballot is a good way to allocate houses

A ballot would be a great way to fairly distribute these houses if the Government decided to stop the waste

A ballot would be a great way to let people have the opportunity to own a house, but just bulldozing an entire suburb is not a good use of Tax Payers Money, build it and bulldoze it whats next Robinson barracks. Ted Darwin

It is completely amazing that anybody would consider bulldozing an entire suburb and who builds a 1 million dollar child care center to then go and bulldoze it 4 years later, how much money do they have ! Eddie

What everyone forgets these were RAAF houses given to DHA, they are still on crown land therefore not able to be sold by DHA, which is why you cant buy one, to DHA its dead money and the reason why they are not fixing them.
If the houses are substandard, why doesnt DHA build new ones on the RAAF Base and sell off the old houses to private buyers??
I challenge you all to try find out who DHA answers to…I can tell you…. no one

What everyone forgets these were RAAF houses given to DHA, they are still on crown land therefore not able to be sold by DHA, which is why you cant buy one, to DHA its dead money and the reason why they are not fixing them as they are not a viable investment.
If the houses are substandard, why doesnt DHA build new ones on the RAAF Base and sell off the old houses to private buyers?? The blocks are huge, rebuild and place 500- 600 new houses there!!
Save the existing housing at Eaton…. NO, not when the DHA rent is the same for a nice new house at Lyons/ Palmo ect.
I challenge you all to try find out who DHA answers/ is responsible to…I can tell you…. no one

I live on the RAAF BASE and worked at the child care centre, It’s not my loss of job, but the families that were effected that cause my concern. Defence did not want any part of it, and left the running to a bunch of bored housewives from DEB to run it, which they could not!! What a waste of a state of the art centre and taxpayers money. Shame on you all. I can’t fathom that defence in general could let this happen! If it is bulldozed, that would be a crying shame for Australia and show an exhorbotant waste of money! Wake up, whoever is concerned or the exposure will be paramount!

This is a crazy position it leads me to believe there is some truth in the rumour about the noise from the new jets being so loud they can sustain people in this suburb without telling any of the other residents of the area. Is it that sneaky and underhanded otherwise why wouldnt they sell off these houses for the people of Darwin

Some of the residents of Eaton have been furnished with letters asking them to relocate as their houses will be used for Housing Commission Occupancy . This has been known for several months . So is there an official document letting everyone know what is actually being done with EATON – which ones r marked for demolition and which ones will be for housing commission …

There are thousands of us living in houses older than those in Eaton and wouldn’t live anywhere else. Why would anyone be mad enough to destroy them when there are families living on the streets and in cars.

How good is Territory “HOUSING” to allow this to happen?
What are the Town “FATHERS” doing to prevent this from happening?
What about the “Traditional Owners” of this land doing to prevent this atrocity? after all it would be them that stand to lose the most out of this stuff-up, have the Larakia Nation mob done anything about this yet?
What has the DARWIN CITY COUNCIL done so far to STOP this BLATANT DISCRIMINATION against the HOMELESS people of the NT (yes not only Darwin and surrounds but I am sure there are people elsewhere in the NT waiting for housing to become available in DARWIN so they or some family member/s can move here for work and/or education) from happening?
And then there are our Politicians, why have they let this happen? C’MON PAUL, do the job we elected you to do, look after the Territory.

According to my own monitoring, thousands of people all over the world receive the personal loans at different banks. So, there is a good chance to receive a credit loan in all countries.

Why save houses that the Asylum Seekers refused to live in. The majority of the houses are falling apart from the inside out. Ive lived on the base for the past 3 years and regret the decilsion to move hear. The goverment is better off demoilshing the houses and starting from scrach.

The proposed destruction or even re location of the houses on the RAAF base is unacceptable appalling waste of taxpayers money.
Just as important are possible RAAF plans to base a new fighter jets in Darwin. Apart from the RAAF Base, all nearby Darwin suburbs will be affected by unacceptable levels of noise.
They would never get away with this anywhere else and nor should they get away with it in Darwin.
Base the new jets in Tindal , not Darwin and do not subject Darwin to regular unaaceptable noise pollution, not even on a weekly basis.
As for building replacement taxpayer funded $900,000 homes for defence force personnel while private citizens cannot obtain a home at all, forget it. Looks like they are building a special world for Government personnel while the rest of us just have to struggle to even rent something. If this is the price of being involved in international conflicts, then bring the troops home.
